So, the Grim Reaper visited me today. He had candy. Slave candy, of course. A nice guy all around, it seemed. At first I was concerned that he was walking around our office unsupervised, but it turns out he is an employee. His badge showed that he even has secret clearance, but I would expect nothing less from the angel of death. :) -J.

enjanerd: oh so i was having this conversation with myself on my way in to work this morning
SPJ: and…
enjanerd: and it occurred to me that i might get fewer cookies if i had a boyfriend
SPJ: really?
enjanerd: but then that sounded weird
SPJ: not if you had a good boyfriend
enjanerd: well, people didn’t used to bring me cookies
enjanerd: that too
SPJ: then you would get lots of cookies probably
enjanerd: but that means that other people who bring me cookies now would stop if i had a boyfriend
SPJ: i’m not so sure
SPJ: i would bring you cookies
enjanerd: then i wasn’t sure
enjanerd: because they would only stop if they were bringing me cookies now because they want me to like them
enjanerd: which i don’t think is the case
SPJ: yeah
enjanerd: so now i’m all worried about my cookie supply
enjanerd: but then i realized… i shouldn’t be worried about my cookie supply… i have my priorities all mixed up
enjanerd: i could make my own cookies
SPJ: you can just get your own cookies
SPJ: yeah
enjanerd: and just not share with my selfish jerk of a boyfriend who doesn’t bring me any cookies
SPJ: that a–hole
SPJ: you should probably dump him
enjanerd: yeah, that’s what i’m thinking
enjanerd: i mean, really… what a jerk
Highlight of the day: Old Navy — pants with *pockets*. Currently having their fall sale. Thanks to TaxBreak for giving me a heads up on the goings on in the world of the pocketed people. :) -J.

Why nerds have such a hard time dating:
“Hey baby, If you were a function, i’d be your derivative, so i could lie tangent to your curves.” -Overheard in the AOE lounge by a friend of William’s
“i’d be an integral so i could be the area under your curves!” -Aaron, in response to the previous quote
Stuff from last week that I forgot to write about…
“Am I sitting on your man?” Dude… If you’re sitting on “my man” and he doesn’t make it clear that your overtures are unwanted, I’m going to have way more issues to take up with him than I do with you. But, no. You’re not sitting on my man. Sit away. :)
TLD in reference to his mother: She’s having her “reproductive going out of business sale.” Because that’s what I always needed to know about my coworkers’ parents.
Ok that’s about it for me. Spent the majority of my evening watching Gilmore Girls. :) Dinner from Five Guys, Gilmore Girls at William’s, then again at my sis’s house. Life is good. :) -J.

Need to get to sleep, but just wanted to leave you with blog for thought… I was talking to my sister today and I came up with this great idea! Friendster seems to be getting big and spreading through the online population. It’s an interesting way to see who you know and how some of your extended friends might know some of your other extended friends. Another online fad, which you are currently witnessing, is the blogging craze. Everyone and their mother has a blog. I, personally, would recommend blogger for your blogging needs. But that’s just me… Anyway, blogs are an interesting way to have a window into someone’s life without really having to go to the effort of meeting them and interacting with them. That way, if you don’t like them, you can just be acquaintances and enemies from afar. It’s convenient. It’s a nice way of being social without actually having to talk to people. Hehe… well maybe other people blog for other reasons, but that’s beside the point. There are over 4 million blogs out there, so lots of people. And lots of people on Friendster looking to meet new people and get to know people with similar interests and whatnot. So… why not combine the two?
Friendster + Blogger = Frogger!!!
So anyone who wants to help get that started, let me know. I’m too lazy to implement this, so you can do it… but don’t go stealing all my brilliant ideas. :) -J.

Good lord… the latest breaking news!!

Sunday — After going to bed at about 6am, I woke up halfway through the afternoon. My bro and his friend Tommy were making biscuits, so I dragged myself out of bed to swipe some. Spent most of the afternoon on the phone… fashiongrrl, William, my sis, her roomies, my pappy… Then off to see Kill Bill. Seems like almost everyone I know has already seen it, but Sean, Jen, and the Yen’s roomies were willing to watch it again, so off we went movie-ing. It was pretty good. As expected it was excessively gory, but I like non-linear storylines… so you have to figure out what the story is and where the story is leading as the movie unfolds. It makes it less predictable… which is rare in movies these days. Anyway, after that, Matt tricked TaxBreak, Sean, my sis, and me into having dinner together. A sly one he is… And just about time for sleep. ‘Nite all. :) -J.

friday — slept in ’til noon. lazed around for a bit, then ran a few errands. Animal Crossing for most of the afternoon. Then Carpool for phase 1 of Critical’s birthday extravaganza. That was by far the most fun I have ever had at a bar. (Thanks Matt for inviting me!) Sat around, some unique conversations… then pool, then back to sitting and drinking. The waitress, who was partial to girly drinks, along with the peanut gallery at the table, helped me out by suggesting a few fruity beverages that I might like. So I tried a bacardi silver raz, a melonball, and another fruity one … whose name I can’t remember. All in all, it was a fun night. Then, it was off to Harris Teeter with Sean for a cookie run. Cookies and Moulin Rouge. I hadn’t seen it before. Very sad… but music was excellent. Overall, I liked it, but sad.
Saturday — Again, slept ’til about noon. Went to the castle for lunch. Started a new blanket today. I actually tried to alter my square pattern to be a rectangle, and I think it might be working. We’ll see. Then waited around to go to Dave & Busters. Phase 2 of Critical’s birthday extravaganza. Entertaining as always at the place of fun and games. Highlight of the night: Shuffleboard! I have seen people play the few times I have been to D&B, but I never learned the rules or tried playing. It was very fun. I now understand why my brother and his friends can play this game for hours on end. It’s physics at its best. It looks so easy… you push a weight just hard enough to get it to the other end of the table. But… there’s strategy to the game too. Anyway, it’s a cool game. We had fun. Then more video games and tickets and such… then adventures home. The reintroduction of the eep’s evening consumptions, the cookie monster almost-casualty of drinking, and much leather/pleather to be tended to. Home for cookies and a chat, then the return of my slumlord, and now… here I am. Exhausted. Time for sleep. Don’t forget to set your clocks back. Thank goodness for the extra hour… that wasn’t spent on sleeping tonight. But that’s ok. ‘Nite all! :) -J.

So, I woke up this morning and there was this guy standing at the end of my bed. Uhh… “How did you get in? What do you want? Why are you here?”
It takes me a second, but then I notice that he has what looks like a gun in his hand. But not a gun… it has a needle sticking out of the barrel of the gun. Kind of like a tranquilizer gun, but instead of darts, it’s more of a syringe type of thing. Anyway, a gun.
He looks at me and says, “Would you like to buy a hat? You can get 10 per year and they’ll send it directly to your house.”
A hat?? Are you kidding me? You broke in, you have a gun, you’re not even wearing or carrying any hats… and you’re trying to tell me you want to sell me hats? So, I get up out of bed, start with my “Stay back!” And move on to my defensive stance. At this point, I don’t really have any idea what I’m going to do. I don’t know how to defend against someone with a weapon. I don’t know what his gun does or what kind of material he has in it… or what he wants. I’m just trying not to spaz. Then he lifts the gun and inserts the needle into his temple. WTS?!? He pulls the trigger four times… then pulls the gun away from his head. Puts the gun down… looks down forlornly, “I really am dead.”
“Excuse me, what?”
“I’m dead.”
“How do you mean..?”
“Well, I used to work for NASA. I spent all my time going to meetings, so I really didn’t notice. I didn’t need to speak to anyone directly for any reason. Then I realized that people didn’t notice when I didn’t go to meetings. They could still see me, but no one would ever talk to me. Then I realized I was dead.”
“Then you realized you were dead…”
“Yes.”
“But people can still see you…”
“Yes.”
“And no one talks to you…”
“No.”
“But I’m talking to you…”
“But you’re asleep.”

My name is Sean, and this is my guest blog.
Some things in life are zero-sum games. When you gamble, either you win and the house loses, or you lose and the house wins. However the world is filled with examples of non-zero-sum games. For example, when I exchange a cookie with enjanerd for advice on my life, we both come out ahead.
The question of the day is whether happiness/luck/emotion/etc is a zero-sum game. And if it is, who are the players and what is the time frame? Are the good things that happen to a single person balanced with the bad things that happen to that person? Or does one person’s good fortune mean that someone else is suffering. I for one don’t think that emotional level of the cosmos is a zero-sum game at any level. I think we can all stand to gain in happiness and good fortune.
What allows two people to both end up better off in an economic transaction? Both parties need to bring something to the table, and both parties need to want what the other has more than what they have and the willingness to cooperate with each other. When these conditions are met they exchange and both are better off.
This cooperation is even easier in non-economic sitautions, because often you don’t have to give anything up to benefit someone else. How much are you giving up to smile at someone you pass on the sidewalk? How hard is it to hold the elevator for an extra second to allow the next person on? Yet I find that these simple things have a way of brigtening the whole day.
So do nice things. Even small ones. Maybe other people will follow your lead and the whole world will be a better place.
