Radio Matchmaker

I was talking to someone a couple weeks ago about people’s method of choosing radio stations and how that relates to their lives and choices in relationships. For instance, someone who stops at the first station that has something they like might go out with the first person who catches their eye. Thereby settling for something, when there’s possibly another station they would like better, or another person they would like more. Whereas someone who checks all the stations and goes back to the best of the bunch might be pickier when choosing a partner. Although, that also might suggest that they are constantly looking around for something (or someone) better.

Anyway, just a thought.

Hokies!

I had forgotten until yesterday evening that the Hokies were playing last night. I think that explains the disproportionate number of people wearing Hokie paraphanalia at Wegmans. I’m still not ok with mini-Vick, but good job in the game.

Other happenings this weekend… Went to NJ for my sis’s b-day and hung out with the relatives. Too bad my mom wasn’t home when we stopped by before leaving for our adventure. My sister, after all, does owe her mother a lot of carrying her around all those months so she could be a viable human. Hehe… Anyway, picked up Ian and then off to NJ.

Friday was pretty mellow. We got a tour of our relatives’ new house. Hung around in their community club house and spent the evening at Wegmans (of Princeton) and Kohl’s. (I got a brand new, shiny springform pan! It’s so awesome. Cake pan with moving parts. How fancy can you get?)

Saturday, we went shopping for window treatments for my sister’s new windows. Wandered two malls, then wandered Philadelphia, while waiting for my cousin to finish up with work. Met up with him and my uncle to go over to Lemon Grass Thai Restaurant and had dinner. Very tasty.

Sunday, came back and did the family dinner thang with Ian’s family. Oh, and on the way back, I tried Burger King’s Veggie Burger. It’s pretty good. I especially liked the wrapper, which proudly stated: “100% Beef.” Brought Biscuit Tortoni ice cream for dessert. We came up with this at the last minute, so the ice cream that we got from the store wasn’t frozen enough and it was still a little soupy when we served it, but it still tasted alright.

And that’s about it. Spending the day today in DC and being a city-girl or something. Later! :) -j.

INGREDIENTS:
* 1/2 cup chopped blanched almonds
* 5 ounces amarettini cookies
* 3 tablespoons dark rum
* 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 cup heavy cream, chilled
* 3 tablespoons brandy
* 1 quart vanilla ice cream, softened

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven or toaster oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Place chopped almonds on a tray and toast in preheated oven until lightly colored and fragrant, 5 to 8 minutes. Let cool completely.
3. Crumble the cookies into 1/2 inch pieces by wrapping in a tea towel and tapping lightly with a rolling pin or mallet. Do not crush into small pieces. Place crumbled cookies in a medium bowl and sprinkle with rum. Toss with almonds and chocolate chips. Set aside.
4. In a large bowl, beat cream with an electric mixer until thickened. Pour in brandy and beat until soft peaks form. Spoon whipped cream over cookie mixture. In whipped cream bowl, now beat ice cream just until softened (with a flat whip, if available). Fold cookie and cream mixture into ice cream. Freeze until serving.An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving movie download

Unwanted Touching

Remember that public service announcement that was being aired about a decade ago about sexual harassment? It was a woman talking with a man (her boss), and as he spoke to her, she shrank. Then it ends with, “That’s sexual harassment and you don’t have to take it!”

Ok, so most of you have taken some kind of training thing at work and been told what does or does not qualify as harassment, what to do if you’re being harassed, either by a coworker or a superior, and how to recognize if something you’re doing could be construed as harassment.

Now, what do you do if it’s not a coworker or superior? Or even a client for that matter. A professional colleague of mine is a touchy-feely kind of person. For the most part, I don’t care. I see him about once every two months at an hour- to two-hour meeting with about 10 minutes of one-on-one time with him. No big deal, I usually stand about a meter away from him when talking and I keep my own personal space.

Yesterday, however, I ended up sitting next to him at this meeting. And, while I know he is touchy-feely of both men and women, I have noticed he is more … let’s say, liberal with his arm and back patting when it’s me. Now, to be fair, I don’t know if he’s touchier with women in general because I don’t have a large enough sample size, but it’s still enough to make me feel uncomfortable.

My problem here is that I do only see him in these meeting situations where there are at least a dozen people around, so I can’t say something directly to him without pulling him out to the hallway or something. I don’t want to make a scene in front of everyone because it really is, most likely, a benign action. And for the most part, I don’t think other people would care if they were in my position. I just value my personal space and don’t like when people touch me without permission.

So, I don’t know what happened yesterday that made me so much more agitated, but I ended up sitting only on the half of my chair away from him and scooting my chair gradually over into TLD’s personal space. (Sorry, TLD.) And I did snap at the guy a couple times trying to get people to stop dwelling on little details so I could just get the information I needed so I could leave and not have to be petted anymore.

Any suggestions? Not an appropriate situation for me to just kick him in the shins and run away, as tempting as that is.One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest video The Misfits film

San Diego — Free Time

Wednesday night, I convinced CarRenter (only one person in our group had their name on the rental car forms) to drop me off at the zoo, since no one else wanted to go. He told me that I’d have to find my own way back, but I didn’t care. I was going to the zoo! On the way out of the hotel, one of my other coworkers decided he wanted to go too, so we got dropped off, while the other two went to get dinner.

Unfortunately, we got done with work late that first day, so we only had about an hour and a half to wander the zoo. In retrospect, I probably should have just waited and gone another night, but I knew I was going out with friends the next night and didn’t know if we would finish any earlier the other days. So, I wanted to go as soon as I could. We got there around 7:30, which left us 90 minutes before closing, but only 30 minutes until sunset.

We got to the zoo and mapped out our general path, making a beeline for the panda house. We got there just in time to see Gao Gao disposing of his day’s meal. Pleasant, I assure you. Hung around a little while to see if he would move around or anything, but he looked like he was ready for a nap. Watched pandacam on the TV nearby and then headed off to see other things. Got to see a lemur, all kinds of cats, two (out of three) separate areas of warthogs, elephants, pygmy hippos, camels, an alligator, a huge anteater, and a bunch of other stuff.

Get a call when it’s getting close to closing time from the other coworkers saying they were just finishing dinner, so they could pick us up if we were going to be done soon. Meet up with them and head back for the evening.

Thursday night, met up with Steph (TLD’s friend, with whom I also have bookclub) and a bunch of her friends. She happened to be there for a wedding that weekend, but got there early to enjoy the beach and hang out with friends. They came by the hotel to pick me up and off we went for margaritas and tacos at some place on Pacific Beach. It was a fun night and I even talked with new people. Very exciting.

Friday night, did the touristy thing and went to Old Town with my coworkers. Had dinner at the Cosmopolitan and wandered around for a little while afterward. Looked for souvenirs, but couldn’t find anything that jumped out at me or reminded me of other people, so I took a pass.

Saturday night, Italian place… Old Venice, I think it was called. Saw a stranger side of my coworkers as they drew on the table. There were markers and paper set out on top of the tablecloth, so it was “normal,” I guess. It just seemed weird to me when CarRenter (probably twice my age), starts moving my glass and plate around so he could have more space to draw. Just… weird.

Other than that, we finished up early on Saturday afternoon and I got to have lunch at the Kansas City Barbecue

She Hate Me hd

: Location of the filming for the “Sleazy Bar Scene in Top Gun.” Food wasn’t the greatest, but passable, considering their main business is as a tourist attraction.

Spent the rest of the afternoon lounging at the hotel pool with a group of kids and pregnant women. Oh and broke my waterproof mp3 player I got for Christmas. That was sad.

Sunday, got up at 3:40am and did the airport thing.
