Went out Saturday morning with Ian for the AIDS Walk. There weren’t that many people there when we started — enough people to fill up the street for about a block. But by the time we walked most of the route and got back to the part where there was overlap, there were tons of people. High school marching band, company sponsors with dozens of employees who came out, and plenty of other miscellaneous groups.
There were a bunch of speakers beforehand and some singers to get people riled up. Also in attendance was Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. She spoke at the beginning, but she also participated in the walk. Well, until she decided to cheat

Ian and I got right up front so we wouldn’t be stuck back by the slow-pokes in the crowd. Congresswoman Norton was up front holding the banner along with a half-dozen other people. They were doing well and they were really keeping up a brisk pace. Almost halfway through the walk, she turns to someone behind her and asked if the other person wanted to hold the banner. Oh, that’s nice of her… she’s letting someone else have a turn at being important. Oh, wait. She’s not being nice. She’s leaving

! Just before the halfway mark, she had someone waiting for her on one of the side streets and she just left. Anyway, after that, the banner people started slowing down a lot, so people just walked ahead.
