My adventure home…
Posted in Life on 03/09/2006 08:43 pm by enjanerdI had to stay late to finish up some things at work today (so I hopefully won’t need to go in on Saturday), so I didn’t catch a ride home with Ian. I figured I could just walk over to the metro and then catch the bus home. I checked the schedule as I was finishing up for the day and found that the metrobus didn’t run that late, but I knew the local bus was still running, so I decided to make a quick trip to the bathroom before heading on my way.
“Quick.”
I left all my things in my office because I thought I’d be like 2 minutes and I didn’t want to drag all my things with me to the bathroom. Get to the bathroom and find that the janitor dude was cleaning it, so I decided to go downstairs and use another bathroom. Take the elevator because I know some of the floors have the the stair doors locked.
I start pushing buttons and none of them work. They flash at me; they taunt me. None of them will stay lit. The elevator brings me to the first floor.
I reject it.
I stay in the elevator as it goes up to pick up a new passenger. He gets on and pushes 1. I ask him if he has a card to use the elevator. Yes, but it only works to get up to the 4th floor. He asks where I’m going. I tell him the 10th floor; would he mind riding back up to the 4th floor with me so I can take the stairs from there? Sure, but some of the stairwell doors are locked. Yeah, I know…
So, I get up to the 4th floor and thank him for his help. Then, I start my journey. I test each floor’s door as I go up, still in search of a bathroom. Hoping that before the end of time I would be able to find my way out of that stairwell. I lucked out and found an unlocked door on the 8th floor! Their bathroom was unlocked too!
Exiting the bathroom, I now had 2 choices of stairwells. Will I choose wisely? I know one of my coworkers got trapped in the stairwell a few days earlier, but I didn’t bother to ask which one. He got stuck in the morning though and someone heard him knocking and offered him freedom.
I choose the one that would bring me closest to the entrance nearest my office. At least then, if I got stuck, I knew there were still people in my group who might possibly hear my knocking. Or even the janitor after he finished cleaning the bathrooms. I knew he was around somewhere.
Fortunately, I made it out unscathed. I chose well.
Got back to my desk and my program had finished running. I was ready to go. Just need to check the bus schedule to know how long my wait would be. Next bus: 40 minutes. Next one after that: 1 hour, 40 minutes. Average time for me to walk to metro and get to my station: 40 minutes.
Ran most of the way to the metro and had about a minute wait for a train. Then I started sneezing. I couldn’t stop. I don’t know what was wrong with me. The nice lady sitting next to where I was standing got tired of saying “bless you.” Then I started getting dirty looks. You know, when people think you have SARS and don’t want to stand next to you?
Anyway, I want to go do other things now. So… I got home and now I’m blogging. The end.
