Have you hugged a tree today?

I received an email today from someone whose sig file included, “Please consider the environment before printing this email.”

At first glance, I thought that was nice. This person cares about the environment! But then, I realized that this was at the end of every email he sends. Why would someone print out an email? Possibly instructions or directions, in which case I feel that is justified, especially if they’re being taken somewhere where they might not have immediate internet access. So, I would have then considered and rejected the environment. I care about the environment. Really, I do. I go around in my free time hugging trees… But it’s not like I’m going to decide to print something out based on whether I saw that line. It’s true that one person can change the world, but I’m doubtful that that reminder is going to have any effect on anyone.

P.S. Please consider the environment before printing this blog.

  1. You remember our backyard? I think I’ve killed like 20 baby trees in the last week. Am I going to hell?

  2. Haha, well… they probably wouldn’t have all grown into big trees with the amount of space they had back there. Just plant a new tree when you get settled in your new place. :)

  3. I agree: directions or e-tickets are the only time I print out emails. But I know several people (almost universally older than 40) who have decided it’s easier to read email on … paper. Kind of defeats the whole “e” part of email.

  4. And today’s observation… A post-it note stuck to someone’s door. “I was looking for you. Let me know when you get back.” Seriously, people. Have you not heard of email? It’s this *awesome* new technology! Btw, everyone involved is under 30 and the one leaving the note was the same person with the sig file.

  5. You have to admit, though, post-it notes are cool. I used to have this screensaver where people could post post-it notes on your computer while you were gone. *sigh* Those were the days.

  6. Hey, don’t be knockin post-it notes. You be surprised how slow people respond to email but yet are all speedy gonzalez like when you leave a post-it note on their monitor. I guess e-mail is easier to overlook but a post-it note is a physical object that will haunt you till the end. Maybe I just have lazy coworkers…
