So Angry

Grr!! They’ve been blocking websites at work lately. I’ve slowly been noticing which ones are disappearing. I was like a day behind hearing about this because apparently the first sites to go were Facebook, MySpace, and porn/gambling sites. This is awesome because now I know what the people who told me were looking at when they discovered the new policy.

My first experience was with Washington Post. Images that weren’t on the front page were getting blocked and the CSS didn’t load properly. Annoying, but the articles are still accessible.

Next, I found out that my office March Madness pool wouldn’t load. I could get to the site, but the bracket wouldn’t load. This was around 9am the first day of the tournament. I ended up wasting more time trying to find a way to fill out my bracket than I would have if I could just access and fill it out in the first place. Yenny filled it out for me using a barely altered version of Kornheiser’s picks from the Washington Post, which I also couldn’t see. So, I’m still in the running thanks to my sister, Tony, and blind luck.

CNN was blocked for a day. Meebo got blocked for a week or so. YouTube is completely blocked (understandably, I guess), even though there are occasional work-related videos that we want to see.

I’m not completely clear on what is being blocked and how all that works. I know there are certain words that are getting blocked from URLs. There are some pages where it gives you a screen of death that says “This site is blocked and your IP address has been logged” and
nothing on the page loads. Other times, it’s specific items that are blocked. And the rest just don’t load properly. This includes google reader. I can’t load it independently, but I can use the mini-version that’s on my personalized google page. In this way, I can still keep up with blogs. I can’t load the Dilbert blog, but I can still read its RSS feed through mini-google reader.

This is the last straw. I’ve been reading Squidgey’s blog in this manner and haven’t had any trouble with it. But last week, I went directly to her site to get a link and Squidgey’s blog is
blocked

. I can still get to the new URL she got, but the CSS doesn’t load. And I can’t read comments, because they point back to her original site.

Yes, yes. I’m sure someone is going to tell me that I should be working at work. But, really? Who works for 8-10 hours straight? Like, actually works non-stop? Please. Of course I’m going to goof off every once in a while. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial for me to take a 5-minute break to read blogs than to go bother my co-workers and goof off for 30 minutes?

So. Angry.
