$20 Hoes

Had a 4-hour bonding session with BFF tonight. Reminiscing, trading stories, and just catching up on the past few months. And ending, as always, shopping online. ;)

We got to talking about fishnet stockings, thigh-highs, and where to find fishnet thigh-highs. The important takeaway:

New Plants!

She also gave me a cactus cutting, but I’m a little apprehensive. I have instructions for planting a cutting though, so it might work. If it takes, I’m concerned that it might grow to the size of hers though. I don’t know that I want to a me-sized cactus hanging around. Sounds dangerous. In any case, I’m going to wait to see how that goes before naming the cactus. Although, I just thought of a name that I like: Spike. ;)

Oh! In other news, my car has a name! Henry. Yeah, that was anti-climactic. Kinda like my car. But a good, reliable name.

And I’m starting to think maybe NewGirl needs a new name… what with working with her not being new or a coworker soon. And she’s moving to the other side of the country. Oh well. I’m out of names for tonight.

Microsleeps…

Because I’m too short for regular sleep.

I haven’t had microsleeps

sneak up on me in years. The past few years, I’ve been getting pretty regular sleep. At least 5 hours a night, usually closer to 7-8. I get drowsy a lot, but I can feel it starting to overtake me.

Last night, I couldn’t fall asleep until about 4am and then I still woke up before my alarm. I figured I would be alright though. Based on what, I’m not sure. So, I drove up to a meeting I had scheduled in Maryland and I knew I was in trouble when I felt how drowsy I was driving. As soon as I sat down at the meeting, I couldn’t stay awake. This wasn’t like when I fall asleep at my desk and I can feel myself getting tired leading up to it. This was like in college where I think I’m awake right up until I blink and lose 2-5 seconds (at least that’s how long I think it is). Half the time shaking myself awake from a weird dream. I can’t even imagine how crazy I must have looked.

I was scared to drive after that, but what could I do? Got back to the office and realized that I was going to be useless since I couldn’t stay awake unless I was standing. At least that was effective. There were times when I was in school when I would just lean up against a wall and take a little nap.

I explained to my bosses and got the OK to go home. Telling my boss with the newborn that I couldn’t sleep last night and now I couldn’t stay awake, so I wanted to go home… Yeah, that was convincing. I shook myself a little and then drove home. All uneventful, thank goodness. A week and a half until my doctor’s appointment. I hope I get put back on my old meds.

Must Love Dogs

Just finished watching Must Love Dogs and I loved it. I must be feeling sappy or something, but it really matched my mood tonight. There have been a few movies where I really didn’t like John Cusack’s characters, but I found myself rooting for him in this one. Granted, I was supposed to. But that never stopped me from disliking his characters before.

R.I.P. Swbs

Today was a sad day. My godfish died. NewGirl and Skunknut have had a betta in their office for the past four months. Whenever the two of them were out of the office, NewGuy and I would make sure Swbs was taken care of.

He developed a fungus a few weeks ago, but some medicine and a new heater for his tank cleared that up. He was never the same after that though. He stopped making bubble nests. He swam around sporadically, but stayed stationary and rested a lot.

We had some good times… He enjoyed preparing to mate, eating, attacking his reflection, and swimming in circles.

Funeral services were this afternoon at 5pm.

*Not actually Swbs. We’re not supposed to have cameras in the office. But he looked a little like the fish in the picture. Well, he was blue. But darker and not as shiny. He was a betta, ok?

GAHHH!! and a spider just ran across my screen. Now I have the heebie-jeebies.

That’s more than my entire college education. Four and a half years of knowledge spent on 6 hours of flowers. What is wrong with people??

What?? And Stephen Colbert is running for President? I need to catch up on my TV.

Better…

Today was better. Crisis was managed, my lunch didn’t explode, got my library books returned last night, found out that there was traffic on the way home because there was a gunman on the loose (!), and class didn’t put me to sleep. I even went for a run this morning, which put me in a good mood. Oh! And I was offered strawberries and mango today. No scurvy for me!

Came so close to getting a good night’s sleep last night for the first time in weeks. I left my ringer on because I was half-expecting a phone call, which came in around 11ish. So, not too bad, but still woke me up. Then woke up again a couple times during the night from Ian/apartment noises. Then, I woke myself up just before my alarm thinking I heard the front door unlock. It was weird. I must have dreamt it, but it sounded so real. So then I was all worked up when my alarm went off and had to get up.

Work is calming down. Finished the bulk of my part for the proposal we’ve been working on. All that remains is addressing whatever comments we get back on this and then it wraps up and gets sent out next week.

Registered for VT Engage today. Not sure where I’m going to do my service hours, but I’m thinking the library. I’ll have to see what they need though, but maybe I could do like 2 hours a week or something. I can afford that.

Frazzled

Couldn’t get to sleep last night. Again. Got a call at 6am today from a friend in crisis. I was so torn between being cranky/groggy and trying to be helpful. I’m exhausted and will probably have to work late tonight. People who were late to our morning meeting ended up repeating comments that were discussed before they got there. It wasn’t a big deal, but I was disproportionately annoyed. My lunch exploded in the microwave and while I was cleaning that up, I dropped my fork on the ground. Our kitchen is out of paper towels. Again. And even though my food exploded, the middle still isn’t warm. Sigh…

I wasted way too much time goofing off even after I couldn’t sleep, so I didn’t get my homework started. Not that big a deal, but I won’t have looked at it thoroughly enough to ask questions in class tomorrow. I never made it to the library this weekend to return my books, so I just renewed them online. That’s enough to allow me to procrastinate another 3 weeks, but then I feel guilty that other people are waiting for me to return these books so they can read them. I’m done with the books. I just need to remember to bring them with me when I go out, so I can drop them off.

How much more could today suck? So. Cranky.

EDIT: Oh, great. Just found out one of my friends who moved for love and school just accepted defeat on both counts. So, she’s resigned the rest of the semester and is looking for a job to pay off her student loans now.

EDIT again: Huh… One of my coworkers offered me a strawberry and that just made the whole day better. I mean, like, a lot

better. I’m so weird. But it was a really good strawberry.

Running with the Squirrels

I’ve been getting kind of antsy lately, which is definitely unusual for me. And with the weather finally turning to fall, it’s nice enough that I would want to go running outside. I haven’t been running in weeks, so I decided yesterday that I would go after work. And then I ended up staying at work (yes, on a Saturday) until well after sundown. I got home around 8:30 after a quick stop at Giant for cake supplies. Just a 10-hour day. At least I get paid overtime, though.

Anyway, I woke up earlier than I intended this morning, so I had plenty of time before heading over to my parents’ for lunch. I went over and mapped out a route for myself and I was off! I’m loving the pedometer thing. I’ve been using a treadmill for a while and that keeps me on pace. But I always end up making deals with myself, like if I can run through the next half mile, I don’t have to run for a full 30 minutes. If I just go this far, I don’t have to finish my workout. It’s kind of bad. I have no endurance or motivation. ;)

Previously, my running routes were to places I knew were a set distance away. I would run there and back. And every once in a while, I would convince myself that I was too tired to go all the way there, so I may as well turn around early. So I definitely need a loop. By the time I try to convince myself I should turn around, it’s not worth it. It’s closer to just keep going. And I know that it’s just a cheap psychological trick I’m playing on myself. But it works, so I’m not going to question it.

After the run, got cleaned up and headed over to my parents’ for my mom’s birthday lunch. Almost everyone was there. Yenny had to miss this week because she’s a workaholic. Sonny called just as we were finishing up and got passed around to chat with everyone. That was pretty cool. He and I usually don’t have much to say to each other on the phone. We usually IM or talk in person when we have anything going on. But I was able to catch him up on all the excitement at the house today. Juniorita is a total technophile. Steph’s mom was there and I brought my dad’s laptop over to show her a picture and Juniorita crawled across the room to come push buttons for me. At least she had motivation.

That’s about it for the weekend. Exhausted from being awake over 12 hours now. So heading to bed early tonight!

Talk to the Hand

Uf. I just checked the timetables for next semester to see what was available on the list of online classes. The only course requirement that I can fill that I haven’t already taken is taught by the same teacher I had for a class in undergrad.

It was one of my first distance learning classes. A professor had left the year before and hadn’t been replaced yet. So, they didn’t have anyone on campus to teach this course. The class met in a video conferencing room and the prof had a camera on him, a white board, and a pad of paper (with a camera pointed down on it). We, however, could only see one view at a time. Which meant that for the entire class, we watched his hand writing on a pad of paper. For 90 minutes, twice a week.

We had a camera pointed at us too, but he never saw when we tried to ask questions. So, my classmates took to reading magazines in class. You haven’t had fun until you’ve read Cosmo with a group of 20 engineers. Yeah. Fun.

I’m speechless. I received this email regarding the engineering society for which I’m on the exec committee:

Do you have an up to date schedule for our Section Meetings?
I realize we have the website, but the panel chairs I am dealing with are not all comfortable with using the website.

Nobel Peace Prize

I am so happy for Al Gore!!

Gore, U.N. Body Win Nobel Peace Prize:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee characterized Gore as “the single individual who has done most” to convince world governments and leaders that climate change is real, is caused by human activity and poses a grave threat. Gore has focused on the issue through books, promotional events and his Academy Award-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”

QuickTime

This is so cool! I was watching a DVD with Dellilah and was fast-forwarding through the previews when I discovered that she plays movies at increased speeds. So, you can still hear the dialogue when fast-forwarding. This was especially awesome because I was watching Letters from Iwo Jima and there was a lot of talking accompanied by not that much in subtitles. So, I watched a 2.5 hour movie in 2 hours. So efficient!

Excitement!

Ooh! I got *2* phone calls in one night! At the same time. Haha… I guess I will use the hu-mans for entertainment now. :)
