Presidential Debate
Posted in Work on 09/29/2008 06:00 am by enjanerdA few people have asked me about this quote since Friday night’s debate, so I thought I’d post it up.
“We tried to build a little ship called the Littoral Combat Ship that was supposed to cost $140 million, ended up costing $400 million, and we still haven’t done it.”
Got that out of a transcript. I didn’t catch the whole quote at the time because I was surprised by the number he cited. But, uhm, I thought we kind of did build that little ship.

I was yelling at the screen during that part. “We totally built that. And yeah, it’s over budget, but it’s complicated! Shut up!”

Haha I can totally picture you yelling that!
Yeah, it’s over budget. Yes, it’s complicated.
But.
It was never estimated to be $140 million. The original numbers I heard were in the 200s.

$220M was the max. LM’s proposal was for something less - I think it may have originally been like $180, actually. But then they CHANGED things! And, well… Don’t get me started on LM and the proposal process. Thank god I started there just after that.

Ooh, thanks for the info! That was way before my time. I guess I only heard the numbers after they were already over-budget.
