Rickets
Posted in Life on 03/23/2009 10:32 pm by enjanerdI went in for my annual physical last week and got some blood work done. I had been avoiding it the past few years mostly out of laziness.
So I got a phone call at work last friday from my doctor’s office with partial results from the blood tests. Normal vitamin D levels are around 60-80 (at least that’s what I remember hearing. The internet says 40-60. No idea what the units are here.) and my test results: 12. I don’t think I’ve ever failed a test by that much before.
Anyway, I assume this is my own doing since I rarely go outside when the sun is out. And, surprisingly, my doctor prescribed me some super strong supplements instead of making me go outside. I’ve been trying out this sun thing lately just to be safe though. Not so bad so far.

depends, did they test 25-oh-vit d or did they test 1,25 oh-vit d. more than likely they tested 25-oh-vit d. units should be ng/dL. i assume your ca and phos were ok? b/c you can get low ca w/ low vit d b/c of decreased gi absorption. watch out for vit d toxicity which can cause high ca, high bp, and manifest in other ways. you should be fine though. i think supplements are dosed in I.U.’s instead of ng.

my ca is fine. it was just the vit d. and i haven’t gotten much sun, so i doubt there’s much likelihood that i’ll od just from the supplement.
