How to be a Girl 101
Posted in Friends on 06/09/2009 10:27 pm by enjanerdI had a girls day out on Sunday with some friends to celebrate a belated birthday. We started out with the most incredible brunch ever at the Ritz. They had a breakfast area, including an omelet bar, waffle bar, and a buffet with eggs benedict, sausage, bacon, crepes… Then there was the sushi/seafood/lunch area. And the 2 dessert stations. It was also the most expensive brunch I’ve ever been to, but I think the bottomless champagne/mimosas balanced that out.
This was followed by a shopping trip. First stop: Sephora. The birthday girl, Mella, had a coupon for a birthday freebie and as we were looking around, I realized Mella would be the perfect person to do my wedding day makeup! She agreed without hesitation — and then asked what the date would be. She then proceeded to ask me about the makeup I use as my eyes glazed over and my complete cluelessness became apparent.
She then took me around the store teaching me the basics and showing me her recommendations. Then we got an employee to help me do a skin match (?) to find the right foundation color for me. Which led to the following:
- Primer
- Pore refiner
- Foundation
- Concealer
- Makeup — the other stuff that makes me pretty after I finish looking “natural”
- Powder
- She Laq — which apparently I’ll need so my makeup won’t run when I sweat
I’m just going to take an intermission here. After I got home and discussed with Ian, we got to talking about wood finishes:
- Clean
- Sand
- Pre-Stain conditioner
- Stain
- Polyurethane/Shellac
If you’ll notice, a woman’s face requires 2 more coats than it does to finish wood.
After I was properly made up [an hour later], we proceeded with our shopping excursion. A stop in to redeem a free panties coupon, some dress shopping, and then the final shoe stop before calling it a day.
It was an all-day immersion training on how to be a girl. Educational and fun!

i could’ve done your makeup, thanks for not asking. :P

you really don’t need that much stuff to make up your face.
smashbox primer keeps makeup from seeping in to your skin and causing breakouts. then use a powder foundation to give a light coat or skip it and use a luminizing lotion instead (smashbox or clinique). a quick stroke of blush on the apples of the cheeks. eyeliner, mascara (covergirl last blast or maybelline waterproof or clinique are my favorites), maybe a quick dusting of eyeshadow if you have time (victoria’s secret makes great ones as does lancome). then finish the lips w/ some mac lipglass or clinique lipgloss. not that difficult, 5 minute or 10 minute face max to be out the door in the AM. you can avoid concealer under the eyes, just dot it over acne spots or something if needed.
takes me about 3 minutes tops every morning b/c i slather on a bunch of acne cream/sunscreen/toner type stuff. then mix a little luminizing lotion (smashbox artificial light, tan shade) with my lotion, line the bottom of my eyes with a black pencil, run some mascara through my eyelashes, and then use some lipgloss and i’m ready to go w/ a natural no-mess look for the day. no mess, no fuss, ready to go in a snap.
so to modify your steps?
1. clean/tone/moisturize
2. powder or liquid foundation
3. blush
4. eyeshadow
5. eyeliner
6. mascara
7. blush
8. lips
add some perfume and you’re done!
but the she laq does sound like a good idea for wedding day makeup.

Yes, I know you could’ve done my makeup, but then who would do *your* makeup? ;)
She does a lot of acting (theater, not the “wants to be on a reality show” kind), so this is kind of her area of expertise. I don’t know if you knew about She Laq before, but that’s the kind of thing I would never have known to even ask about.
And no to perfume. Just no. :P

perfume is great, you’re totally missing out. but it’s ok w/ the allergies and all i guess.
it amazes me how you can be so non-girly at times lol. ;)

I don’t even do that. I only use concealer on my dark circles… and sunscreen underneath. I’m sure I’ll use more the older I get. :(
