What’s worse than finding a worm in your apple?

Finding half a worm!

I was reminded this evening of this joke we used to tell in elementary school. It was gross-funny, but always in an abstract way. But tonight… while I wasn’t glad to find a worm in my dinner, I was _really_ glad that the worm that I did find was whole. Because, ew. Gross.

No worries, though. Most of you will never have occasion to eat there. I was at the Navy Yard and not in a restaurant or something. And, honestly, I don’t even really blame them. It’s not like I expect that they could possible check every potato before cooking it. Worms just don’t happen to end up in people’s food normally… at least not that I know of.

Can’t sleep. Cylons will eat me.

Had my first “woke up screaming” dream last night. I don’t even remember yelling or hearing anything, but Ian woke me up asking if I was having a bad dream.

So, we never got into the Battlestar Galactica thing… But after this spring’s JoCo concert, where a bunch of jokes went over our heads because we don’t watch and a few friends assured us that we should still go back and watch it, we figured it’d be good filler for the summer.

Ian and I have been watching for the past few weeks (Netflix) and, I’ll admit, it took me about 2 DVDs into season 1 before I was hooked. We made it through 2 DVDs in the past 3 days, which had cylons heavily on my mind. Mix that in with all the TV we caught up on Friday night — Bones, House, Fringe, Dollhouse — and I was having crazy dreams.

Anyway, I don’t remember most of last night’s dream. All I remember is the cylons trying to saw my head off. Why would they do that? They all use guns. So it’s not even realistic for fiction. But, man, did I think it hurt.

This week

Wow, way too much stuff going on lately…

Went to NY for a family dinner/banquet thing last weekend. Stopped by my uncle’s office… at Google!

Went out to dinner with some cousins Friday night, drank lots of bubble tea all weekend, visited the cemetary (Ian and Anna’s first visit!), visited with aunts and uncles, had the big banquet with hours of pictures and SO much food! I’m sure I’ll be getting more pictures shortly. The ones posted are just the ones from my camera, which were mostly candid shots and pictures I took of people as they were trying to take posed pictures. Lots of fun catching up with all the relatives over the weekend! Exhausting, though… too much planned in so little time.

Set a personal record on one of the running machines at the gym on Monday! I made it to the gym late for my class, so I figured I would run afterward to make up the extra time. That, and as punishment to teach me to be punctual since I hate running. But I ran a 5:56 mile, which is crazy fast for me. I don’t think I’d ever broken 7 minutes before. The machine was probably generous with its stride measurement or something, but I’m still claiming that as my personal best!

Tried to bike to work on Tuesday for Car-Free Day. Ended up having one of the bungees on my saddle bags snap and get wrapped around the gears of my bike… and having to call in a rescue from TLD. (Thanks again!) So, yet another adventure biking to work.

School has been improving slightly. No homework this weekend, but I’m behind by about 6 lectures. They don’t seem to be related to the homeworks as far as I can tell though, so I don’t think I’m missing much class-wise. I’m just missing the knowledge that I should be gaining.

The online portion of the class has been starting on time this week. The slides are posted after class instead of before when they would be useful, the sound is mostly static because the prof wanders away from the mic, and the TA who transcribes what the professor writes on the board is bad at copying (i.e. writes down the wrong letters), but I guess they set expectations so low the first 4 weeks, I’ll settle for this.

I’m slowly making the transition over to Chrome and holy moly is that fast! I’m still having trouble transitioning because I keep trying to use mouse gestures, passwordmaker, and other add-ons that I’ve grown accustomed to in Firefox, so it’s a very gradual transition. But I’m getting there. I went to fill out my timesheet for work, which usually takes 10-15 seconds to load up the job order after you select it. And I was sitting there like a fool today waiting… when it had loaded in ~3 seconds.

wptogoI’ve installed the WPToGo app on my phone. It’s simple, handy, and really easy to use… but I’ve only used it once because I keep not remembering to blog stuff. But I still recommend it. :)

Went to the H Street Country Club with my coworkers this week for some department bonding time. I was reminded of how much I love shuffleboard! And there was some mini-golf in there too.

Getting spun up on this Young Professionals group I’m chairing this year. I have a schedule laid out with museum tours, ship-related movies, and volunteer activities for the next 8 months. Now all I have to do is get people to show up! My company might even let us do movie night in our conference room. I’m in the process of getting that set up.

Left on my to do list:
- Find watch. It’s been missing for close to 2 months now. I figured it would just turn up as I went about my day to day activities, but it hasn’t. I’m starting to think it might be buried on my desk somewhere.
- Clear off desk… then, use desk. Possibly find watch.
- Start/make presents for all the babies that are being born around me. I think the count is up to 6 this year. I bought presents close to a year ago thinking I would have time to put these together for baby showers, but I think it might be more realistic for me to aim for first birthdays. ;)

See why I keep not updating? Every time I think of something, I remember a bunch of other things I should’ve written about. So until I have time to write about everything, I don’t write about anything. This is also why I haven’t called friends back in weeks (months?). I don’t call unless I have time to sit down and actually have a conversation. And who has time for that?

Anyway, I’m sure I’ve missed loads of other stuff. Birthdays, friends visiting, OH AND DISTRICT 9! Which was spectacular! But I’m going to bed now. So I can study tomorrow. And possibly make a cake. Google’s birthday is Sunday!

Dear AOE 5104 Students:

I have just concluded a meeting with Professor Mook and GTA Chris Rock. In the next couple of hours, I will be establishing a site for the online section at http://scholar.vt.edu. Mr. Rock will work with Professor Mook to send out an email that will provide specifics for which presentations you should be studying and describing the homework assignments as well as other logistics. All materials for the online section will be maintained at the scholar site, and there will be daily communications to you from Dr. Mook and / or Mr. Rock.

Subsequent in-class lectures will be available for you to log into via distance-learning software, for which you will be given download / installation instructions. Furthermore, there will be one hour per week in the evening of on-line log-in opportunity for you to have Q&A with Dr. Mook and Mr. Rock, beginning next week. I am working with the Institute for Distributed and Distance Learning to get this set up.

Please accept my second apology, and my assurance that I will not leave the office today without having personally seen to the establishment of these essential elements of the online delivery of this course.

So, either this will be resolved today or the department head will be spending a lot of time in his office… ;)
