Last night’s debate, in my opinion, had an obvious winner: CNN.

Their technology is far superior to what the other networks demonstrated. Their HD broadcast had 6 analysts who were scoring the debate real-time, as well as independents in Ohio with dials who could react throughout the debate.

I love watching independents react. Last week’s debate, they reacted positively every time someone spoke. Last night, they were divided on the graph as men and women. At one point, the men went back in time and reacted very negatively. The women reacted positively as stereotypically expected — personal stories, things that would cause empathy or other strong emotions, etc.

And then the analysts! Last week, Begala was asleep for the first half hour, but totally came back and had a score close to the rest of the analysts.

Rosen and Rollins were the token extremists. Their scoring was clearly partisan, sometimes giving their candidate more points than the other analysts combined. Last night, Rosen was keeping up and was pretty even with Rollins… until about 10 o’clock. At which point, Rollins fell asleep on the plus button for Palin and gave her 10 points all at once, even though she had stopped talking. This was obviously a mistake, because soon after that, he reduced that to only a 9-point increase.

By the end of the night, Rollins definitely had the win for the most total points on his scorecard, awarding Palin 4 times as many points as other analysts and twice what he awarded Biden.

QOTD: “Did Rollins just have a thumbgasm?”

I think it’s ridiculously unfair that I have both insomnia and narcolepsy these days. How is this even possible?

I think it started last week when I finally rid my body of the influenza virus. I’ve been having some trouble sleeping, but it was mostly like 11-12 o’clock trouble. After I spent 2 days last week completely out of it, I was wide awake after pre-Thanksgiving. I stayed up progressively later each night, until Saturday night when I was up until 7am. This didn’t turn out too badly since I woke up at 11 and had a normal day. I got drowsy around 6, but willed myself to power through it by doing laundry and fidgeting a lot. And once I made it over the hump, I thought I would go to bed around 9 or so and get back on track. But no.

Once I made it through the drowsy period, I was awake. I stayed up and watched the Patriots and the Eagles play some sub-standard football. Not like bad football, but just not up to their usual standards. By that I mean Tom Brady had a less than stellar game. They still won, but not enough for me to get a fantasy football win. *sob*

Yenny suggested it might be my new meds. Which is possible… that doesn’t explain last week, but combine that with starting back up after taking a week off, and it might explain my self-perpetuating issue now. I hope I get used to this soon. The staying awake part is good. And I’m not tired in the morning — even get up before my alarm regularly now. It’s kind of scary. But it’s a little unsettling to be up at 1-2 in the morning on a weeknight, especially when I’ve been getting up early to catch the bus lately.

I’m afraid this might affect my sanity. You know, what little of it I have left…

QOTD: “The Internet: It isn’t just for porn any more.”

This is so cool! I was watching a DVD with Dellilah and was fast-forwarding through the previews when I discovered that she plays movies at increased speeds. So, you can still hear the dialogue when fast-forwarding. This was especially awesome because I was watching Letters from Iwo Jima and there was a lot of talking accompanied by not that much in subtitles. So, I watched a 2.5 hour movie in 2 hours. So efficient!

Friday — Got out of work relatively late. Big presentation at work this week and we were trying to get everything QAed and commented before the weekend. So… our dry run went 2.5 hours over with comments on pretty much every slide. But I was assured this was a good presentation. Awesome.

Got home and watched Happy Feet. Wow. The opening sequence was pretty much an animated version of March of the Penguins. Then, there was a lot of cheering and breeding. It was … different than I expected. I thought it’d be more of the cute baby penguins singing and being cute. But there was a story line that went with it and stuff.

Saturday — Got groceries, hung out with my gramma, ran errands… Went over to Ben’s for board games and booze. It was loads of fun. SPJ even came down from NY to hang out. There was boggle, clue, guitar hero II (2 player!), poker, and, of course, celebrity. Some memorable celebrities: Livvy’s mom, GOP (Which, btw, Ian and I later figured out was supposed to be God. Oops.), George Washington Carver, Claude Debussy, and Don Hyatt. Ah, friends…

Now, I’ve just started trying to remember as many of the celebrities as I can. I’m up to 33. Out of 52, I think. Must… keep… remembering…

Sunday — loafed around and slept a bunch. Went over for Gilmore Night at Ian’s parents’. The electricity went out. It was very exciting.

Monday — Slept a bunch again. Went over to hang out with gramma, Yenny, Sonny, and Anna. Sonny and Anna got me a hokie vase! It’s so cute. It’s not actually hokie, just hokie-colored. It’s under our TV now. :)

Ok, so over the past 5 (…10?) years I’ve signed up for pretty much all the big social networking sites that I came across. SixDegrees, Friendster, MySpace, Orkut, LinkedIn…

Over the last few years or so, basically since I graduated, these have mostly lost their appeal for me. I thought Orkut was cool on the sole basis of the Google affiliation. I got a MySpace account to read other people’s blogs. I’ve never even bothered to fill in my profile.

When all the newbies started at work last year, there was this big fuss about facebook and how everyone had an account and I should totally

  get one. I was unimpressed and uninterested, so I didn’t bother. After the VT shootings, I was looking for some of my old classmates. A bunch of them, I email every once in a while, so I still have some contact info for them. And I transfer their phone numbers with each new cell phone. But it’s not like I talk to them often or regularly. I kind of do the IM away message stalking thing.

Anyway, I signed up for a facebook account and looked for people I knew. Within 12 hours or so, I got found by a few former classmates. And 2 weeks later, I’m, again, wondering what all the hype is. The night I signed up, I spent about an hour poking around looking for people. Then I looked again a few days later when I received my first post on my wall.

I just thought of it today, so I went to see if anything had changed. It hadn’t. I went to browse groups and on the first page, found Adderalics Anonymous – VT Chapter

  . *gasp* That was something I could relate to! How exciting for me. Then, I clicked on it to view more and … it’s mostly a bunch of people looking for a dealer.
“I’m out :(”
“If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it. willing to pay $$”
Ohh, two dollar signs. Is that like the in restaurant reviews? Should I hold out for $$$?
“what the biggest single dose you’ve ever taken?”

Sigh…  Kids these days…

I think I’m getting old. Or maybe I’m just cranky. I just clicked on “Students Against the International Astronomical Union” and it made me laugh.

- Yes, I’m a girl. But that doesn’t mean I’m NewGirl. One of the Bobs has been working with NewGirl periodically for the past couple months, but can’t seem to tell her apart from me. We’re different races, heights, and have different hair color (hers is curly and mine is straight). Also, I’ve only met him twice. The first time, he insisted that we met already and my name is NewGirl. When I corrected him, he failed to tell me his name. Today, he stopped by

- Do not paste the text from 500-page documents into the body of an email and then send it. That’s just dumb.

- The last issue, I don’t even know how to deal with. I have a sensitive nose and sometimes smells that other people don’t notice or don’t smell on themselves bother me. There are the smokers, who I think know, OffensiveGuy who smells like onions, some others who smell happily of soaps (I passed someone from 2-3 ft away yesterday and I could smell that he used Dial.)… and then someone in my office today reeked of OldManSmell and my nose started to burn. Last time, this guy smelled like he ate a box of Altoids, which I must admit I now prefer.

How do you politely say, “I’m sorry, but I need you to leave my office now. My face is burning from your stench.”

And in gossip news, my cousin is interning at *GOOGLE* this summer!! So awesome!

QOTD: “If you happen to find an extra 100mt of fuel around here, I think people would be happy.”
“Yeah, let me go check my other pants.”

So many things going on. My synopsis of February so I can have a fresh start and write about things as they happen:

2/2 – Happy Groundhog day! Ian and I met up with Crit&Teach and my sis at the Cheesecake Factory. Haven’t had a chance to catch up with them in a while, so we ventured out to use the gift card they gave us for Friendmas. Good times!

2/5 – Happy Workaversary, Ian!

2/6 – Sofa Delivery. It is fantastically comfortable, but the delivery guys scuffed the corners and started a tear at one of the seams. We are waiting for sofa parts and then the repair guy is going to come back and fix up the sofa. All very strange to me. Sofas have parts?

2/8 – Got to take a day trip up to NY for work. I went by to visit our NY office (a block away from the Empire State Building!) before heading over to Hoboken to watch some model testing. It was pretty cool, but I think the DVD they made will be better. Each test run took about 15 seconds and then they would have to wait 10-15 minutes for the water to settle. Can’t have any residual waves… that would ruin *everything*.

I had fun riding the train. I don’t think I’ve been on a train since my family moved to Louisiana. That was 20 years ago. They’re so fancy now… I sat in the quiet car on the way up and caught up on some lectures and started my homework. There were even outlets next to some of the seats. So convenient!

2/9 – Happy belated birthday, Roy!

2/13 – Went out to dinner with the girlz. We were supposed to go to the spa after work, but it was icy and snowing, so we all ended up canceling and will reschedule later. Finished up early and went over to TLD’s for custard cake. Mmm!

2/14 – Happy Valentine’s Day! I had a test on Wednesday night and this was the first time in over 4 years when I haven’t made Valentine cookies. So sad. :( I also haven’t had a cookie exchange, which is usually some time between New Year’s and Presidents Day. I might just pass this year. We’ll see how things go.

Had a nice dinner at home with Ian after my test. Pretty low-key. He got me a shirt! So cute:

Mm… chocolate…

2/15 – Went with my sis and Eepie to visit Squidgey and Rock in Omaha. Lots of video games and food. We went to Iowa for my sister to satiate her gambling addiction. Went downtown and tried the “world’s best hot chocolate” at Aroma’s
Rambo video

. I think I still prefer Burdick’s but this stuff was pretty good. It’s saying something when I couldn’t finish my drink because it was too sweet. Yeah, I’m sad for me too.

2/18 – Happy Chinese New Year! Went out for Chinese food at the place where Squidgey and Rock claimed our mother’s doppleganger works. She wasn’t there, but the chairs they had were the same as the ones at my parents’ house. Weird.

2/19 – Returned from Omaha just in time for dinner at my parents’ house. Ian was waiting for me at the airport when we landed with a batch of snickerdoodles! Mm!

2/20 – Happy Mardi Gras!

Checked my grades when I was uploading my homework for submittal this weekend and saw that my score for the test I took last Wednesday was 10/100. 10%. How is that even possible? I was a little freaked out, so I emailed my prof and found out that they had only graded one question so far. That’s a weird way to post grades. Anyway, didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but still much better than 10%. We’ll see how things go…

QOTD: “even if i were to work at a chocolate factory run by strippers, i think the day after a holiday weekend would still suck.”
LOTD: Pet Penguin!

I went through a phase in life where I had severe insomnia. I was also suffering from depression at the time. And every now and then, when I get preoccupied by things, I will have difficulty sleeping at night, but nothing close to when I had insomnia. And… in a twist of irony, the reason I’ve been drowsy for the past 8 years is because I have narcolepsy.

I went to see a neurologist yesterday about the daytime sleep study I had done. The results indicate that I possibly have narcolepsy. They can’t say for sure without monitoring me for an extended period of time to ensure I get enough sleep at night and still have results like this during the day. But, if that’s what they’re basing this on, I would go with the narcolepsy diagnosis. I had enough sleep the night before; when they did the night time study, I slept for 7 hours through the night, and came home to take another nap before going to work.

Oh my goodness! I love the internet! I associate narcolepsy with a video I watched in my high school psych class: Narcoleptic Dog

QOTD:
“We know someone with bipolar; she’s very forgetful.”
“Are you sure you’re thinking of bipolar?  I don’t think that’s a symptom…”
“Yeah, she takes medicine for it. And if she doesn’t take it, it’s because she forgot.”
“Are you thinking of that old lady you know?”
“No, but she’s forgetful too.”

So, this was another eventful Thanksgiving.

First Thanksgiving was at my parents’ house. It was raining, so there was no fried turkey this year. No worries, though. My mom tried out a brining technique and baked a turkey that even I had a second piece of. My sis made stuffing, as usual. Lenny and Steph brought their frozen fruit mold and some cheesecake. Both quite tasty, and the fruit was really good with ginger ale. Also on the spread: cornbread, green bean casserole, spare ribs, potatoes and mixed vegetables, lo mein, sticky rice, cranberry sauce, and a half-eaten loaf of wheat bread that my father offered up. On the dessert table: pumpkin cake, apple pie, pumpkin custard pie, pumpkin cranberry bread, and ice cream. I think I’m going to try making a sweet potato pie next year. I’ve been hearing lots of good things.

Other highlights: we had several copies of Thursday’s circulars, so everyone could decide where they wanted to go shopping on Black Friday. Wii!!!! Man, that was crazy fun. I also heard a rumor about Animal Crossing for Wii, where you actually fish and have to use the numchuck to reel the fish in. I’m very excited about this.

Second Thanksgiving at Ian’s parents’ place. Relatively quiet this year, compared to the past couple holidays where it was at his aunt’s place. Got a taste of some of the things I missed on my family’s usual menu: mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes. Mm! There was also turkey, of course, green bean casserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, and olives (I’m making progress on learning to like these! I think I’ll like them next time I try them. That was #6, I believe.). And for dessert the options were home-made pecan pie and pumpkin pie, with hand-whipped cream on top. I’m disappointed because I was so stuffed by that point, I was only able to try one type of pie.

On the way back, I stood in line in front of CompUSA for about an hour and got inside to find no trace of the sale items I was interested in. Not even a sign and an empty shelf. I suspect they didn’t have what I was looking for. Cheaters.

Friday, I hung out at Costco for about three hours waiting to get 2 new tires. I wandered Costco for an hour, hung out at Borders for an hour, then read my new book (Are Men Necessary? by Maureen Dowd) in front of the tire center until I saw my car come out. I even talked to some strangers. Conversation spurred by the book.

Saturday night, met up with DW and one of Ian’s coworkers at Lost Dog. Fun time. Haven’t been there in a while. Got plenty of gossip too!

Sunday, I worked on the new blanket I started. Not sure what/who this will be for, but I had a pound of dark green yarn and I couldn’t think of anything to use it for. I don’t even know why I have it, since I’m not particularly fond of the color. Otherwise, spent a lot of the weekend watching tv and reading. Finally getting around to “studying” for the GREs. Yeah, it’s half-hearted, but at least I’m making an effort. That’s more than I did for the SATs and that actually had an impact on my future. Well, technically, it did.

Anyway, my only new recipe this year:

Pumpkin Cake

Hellraiser: Bloodline buy

download 20 Years After dvd

   5 Card Stud divx
INGREDIENTS

    * 1 cup vegetable oil
* 3 eggs
* 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 2 1/2 cups white sugar
* 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1 teaspoon ground allspice
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 teaspoon ground cloves
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 cup chopped nuts

DIRECTIONS

   1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease one 10 inch bundt or tube pan.
2. Cream oil, beaten eggs, pumpkin and vanilla together.
3. Sift the flour, sugar, baking soda, ground nutmeg, ground allspice, ground cinnamon, ground cloves and salt together. Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture and mix until just combined. If desired, stir in some chopped nuts. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let cake cool in pan for 5 minutes then turn out onto a plate and sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.

Notes: Replaced half the oil with apple sauce and made without nuts. It had a very dense, moist texture. Baked in a cake pan instead of bundt pan. The middle kind of sank, so I probably didn’t bake it long enough. The edges were cooked through though, so it probably needs something that would distribute the heat more evenly. If a bundt/tube pan is unavailable, these would probably do well as loaves.

Served with vanilla ice cream instead of the suggested cream cheese frosting. Might try making cupcakes next time for more variety… nuts, chocolate chips, frosting, etc.

QOTD: “you should start preemptively farting at the boys”

The Salton Sea download

   today:

“The message yesterday was clear: The American people want their leaders in Washington to set aside partisan differences, conduct ourselves in an ethical manner, and work together to address the challenges facing our nation,” Bush said.

“I’m obviously disappointed with the outcome of the election and, as the head of the Republican Party, I share a large part of the responsibility,” Bush said.

Right, the message was clear. He’s obviously disappointed that Americans want to set aside partisan politics and expect politicians to behave ethically and collaborate. Good one.

And another:

“I didn’t want to inject a major decision about this war in the final days of the campaign,” Bush said. He added, “Win or lose, Bob Gates was going to become the nominee.”

Oh, yeah right. Why lie about it if you were going to replace him anyway? I’m kind of glad that he did, since that might have been one of the few things that could actually have helped the Republicans. But it’s a stupid thing to deny now.

I was mostly kidding yesterday about beating Ian up, but apparently it’s actually true. It’s old news in Ohio, but something to think about since it’s new to Virginia: Domestic Violence Charges Can’t Be Filed Against The Unmarried

The Prize dvd

Evil Dead II movie

Domestic violence charges cannot be filed against unmarried people because of Ohio’s recently enacted definition of marriage, a judge ruled Wednesday.
…
Frederick’s public defender, David Magee, had asked the judge to throw out the domestic violence charge because of the new wording in Ohio’s constitution that prohibits any state or local law that would “create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals.”

Before the amendment, courts applied the domestic violence law by defining a family as including an unmarried couple living together as would a husband and wife, the judge said.

Now courts can’t do that because of the gay marriage amendment, Friedman wrote.

Apply to insurance, medical decisions, wills… This isn’t to say that I would be for this if they actually went to the trouble of specifying same-sex individuals, but this is writing into our Bill of Rights that we are to take away rights currently upheld in the Commonwealth. If I understand this correctly, my company could be prohibited from offering health coverage to my domestic partner. They weren’t required to before, but this would be offering rights/benefits and recognizing a “relationship of unmarried individuals”. *Gasp*

People who are gay already knew that they weren’t welcome in Virginia, but now we have it in writing! Thank goodness we now have protection for people like Britney and Kevin to uphold the sanctity of marriage. Right. Thanks.

QOTD: “Did you vote today?”
“No, but I gave blood.”

Hair dryers! They’re fantastic! If your hair is wet and, instead, you want it to be dry, you can use this device to to blow warm air around and make your hair dry. *Awesome*

So, my brother has this box of “door prizes” and every time people visit him, they can pick a prize out of the box to take with them. It’s filled with things like old CDs, DVDs, and magazines. Stuff he doesn’t want anymore, but someone else might find useful. The last time I was over there for Karoke Jam, I picked out a hair dryer because I’ve never owned one before. Why my brother had one, I don’t know. He’s been in the army for like 6 years and has no hair to speak of. Explains why he didn’t want it though.

In any case, I’ve been using it for the past couple weeks and it has made my hair dry much faster than normal. Doesn’t make it look any different since my hair is straight and that’s about the extent of what it does. But it was dry!

QOTD: “So it will suck too — I mean it will have the same features.”

P.S.  Oooh, scary… It’s Friday the 13th.  *gasp*

Spent the weekend in Boston with the fam. Flew up on Saturday morning (Jet Blue!) with Ian and my sis, but the rest of the family drove up. Did most of our site-seeing and catching up with people on Saturday. Caught the T out to the hotel while the family was hanging out at Cheers. They got back shortly after we arrived.

Went to Bartley’s Edison for lunch, where Mr. Bartley sat outside and took our order. Hung out there with Sonny, Yenny, Ian, and DW. From there, we went to Burdick’s to introduce my sibs to their hot chocolate. Soooo good.

After that, my sibs went back to the hotel with the parents and DW, Ian, and I met up with Jessica and wandered over to the Science Museum. There was some new fancy exhibit, but we decided it was too expensive for us, especially since we were only going to be able to stay for an hour or so. Wandered off from there and went to the Dairy Fresh candy store. Oh, there was so much candy. Bought some for presents, some to share with the family, and some for us. :)

From there, we headed back to the hotel to drop off all our things before heading back out to meet up with some of Ian’s friends/former coworkers. Had dinner with them at Christopher’s, watched the Yankees lose, and caught up with even more people at Bukowski’s

   . Decided to head out a little before midnight and made our way back to the hotel.

Sunday, got off to a slow start. My mother and L&S had looked up a local church, so they went to attend morning services. The rest of us slept in, watched sports highlights, and got ready for fantasy football. When the churchers returned, we gathered into the car toward Fenway. We had lunch at Beer Works and everyone got to try fried pickles. Yeah, they sound weird, but they taste good. Mmm!

While we were headed there, Ian and I got to point out where we rioted 2 years ago when the Red Sox won the World Series. We watched in Beer Works, so we were right across the street from Fenway and in the Eye of the Storm.

We all headed back after lunch and loafed around until it was time for the weekend’s main event: my cousin and her husband’s wedding reception. It was so fancy — table cloths and

  name cards. It was a big traditional Chinese banquet, so it was a lot of drinking and a lot of really good food. She let her uncle emcee for her. I don’t know if she expected him to tell so many, uhm… jokes. ;) Lots of fun and definitely a good excuse to visit Boston for the weekend. And it’s always nice to see the cousins again.

The fam headed out after dropping Yenny, Ian, and me back off at the hotel. We spent one more night, got breakfast at the Busy Bee, then caught the T to head to the airport. Yay Jet Blue!
